Launch Night Fever
The Launch Event for the Empire of the Sikhs exhibition was a bustling, joyous affair.
Despite the all-important England World Cup semi-final being played at the same time, we had a full house of enthusiastic attendees all eager to gain a preview of the first major exhibition on Sikh Empire since the V&A's 'Arts of the Sikh Kingdoms' in 1999. Their feedback left us in no doubt that all our hard work had paid off!
Launch night speeches were by SOAS Professor of Sikh & Punjab Studies, Professor Gurharpal Singh, and our very own Chair of the UK Punjab Heritage Association (UKPHA), Amandeep Amdara OBE. The warmth of the reaction, in particular Amandeep's word of thanks to the main curatorial team at Kashi House led by Parmjit Singh, was gratifying.
Refreshments on a hot and humid evening were courtesy of our long time sponsors and friends, the Punjab Restaurant of Covent Garden - we thank Mr Seetal Singh Mann and family for their generous ongoing support.
Thank you to all who came, and to all our volunteers; financial supporters (including those who wished to remain anonymous); the public and private lenders (including the Royal Collection, and the main lender to the exhibition, Davinder Toor); the Brunei Gallery manager, Mr John Hollingworth MBE, and all his team; and all the staff at SOAS including Mr Ed Simpson and the SOAS South Asia Institute (SSAI) for all their unstinting support, dedication and expertise in making this world-class, community-driven endeavour happen.
